Community Collaboration Leads to Transformative Cleanup of Open Garbage Area in Fulbari

As a team committed to environmental advocacy and activism, we knew we had to take action when we saw the state of the open garbage area in Fulbari behind Pema Guest House. The piles of waste and litter scattered throughout the area not only posed health hazards for local residents but also threatened the natural beauty of the world heritage site Boudhanath stupa. So, we mobilized our resources and set to work organizing a cleanup effort. We reached out to local students and members of the Boudhanath Area Development Committee and Boudha Ward Office, K.M.C-06, who were eager to lend their energy and enthusiasm to the cause. We also invited the community police force who helped us coordinate logistics and ensure that the cleanup effort was safe and well-managed. Additionally, we enlisted the support of a private waste management firm known as Boudha Sarsafai Kendra Pvt. Ltd, who provided us with the tractor which we needed to transport the waste.

Together, we spent hours working tirelessly to clear the garbage area. The total trash collected was 420 sacks. We swept, raked, and bagged up litter and debris. As we worked, we were heartened to hear words of encouragement from local residents. One woman, in particular, stopped to thank us for our initiative. “I am so proud of what you are doing,” she said. “This garbage area has been an eyesore for years, and it’s wonderful to see people coming together to make a real difference. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.” Thanks to our collective efforts, the open garbage area in Fulbari is now a much cleaner, healthier, and more inviting space. Local residents have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for our work, and we’ve even inspired other community groups to take similar action in their own neighbourhoods. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we know that if we continue to work together and stay committed to our cause, we can make a real difference in promoting a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Nepal.
